Cornwall has a temperate climate and the mildest and sunniest weather in the United Kingdom as a result of its southerly latitude and the influence of the Gulf Stream. Cornwall is one of the sunniest areas in the UK, with over 1541 hours of sunshine per year, with the highest average of 7.6 hours of sunshine per day in July according to the Met Office. Also due to the Gulf Stream, Cornwall has the UK's only area of sub-tropical climate, at the extreme south-west of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Palm trees are a common sight in these areas and along the South coast there are several outstanding botanical gardens.
