Wild moorland hills rolling down to a spectacular, sandy beach and some of the best surfing in the country, it's hardly surprising that the scenery is what most people remember best about Gwel an Mor Resort and Portreath. But there's so much more to it than that!
Gwel an Mor Resort, a luxurious development of three bedroom Scandinavian style lodges, each offering three spacious bedrooms, the master bedroom with en-suite facilities, interiors are individually designed and furnished to the highest standards, and include satellite television, with DVD and CD player. Kitchens offer microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and washing machine dryer. The lodges each have large decked terraces where you can relax privately on sun beds or in the evening watch the fishing boats head out to sea whilst having dinner.
The clubhouse boasts a large indoor pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, as well as a fitness suite and has a cafe area with sun deck overlooking the children's adventure play area. There is also a putting green and croquet lawn. Our Restaurant and Bar, The Terrace, is open daily for lunch and evening meals.
The Area
Set on the picturesque north Cornish coast, the historic fishing village of Portreath was once a thriving hub for the local tin mining industry. Whilst mining is now more of a visitor attraction than a way of life, the harbour is still a major feature with the fishing boats coming and going much as they have for over a century. Portreath can also boast a beautiful sandy beach with its own famous surfing school.
If you feel like stretching your legs, it's perfect walking country. The coastal footpath offers dramatic views of the surrounding countryside and out over the vast blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean (next stop Canada!). Tehidy Country Park backs on to Tehidy golf course, renowned as one the best in the county.
Also on our doorstep is the Mineral Tramways cycling/walking/bridleway route, where you can gain access to 26 miles of historic trails to explore.
Slightly further afield, Gwel an Mor's proximity to the main A30, means you're within easy reach of Cornwall's other major towns and attractions, its close to St Ives and The Eden Project at St Austell is around a thirty minute drive.
There is ample parking and easy access.
Follow the A30 into Cornwall. At Chiverton Cross roundabout, take the 2nd exit signposted Redruth. Take the 2nd exit slip road off the A30 to Redruth, Portreath and Porthtowan. Go up the slip road and turn left to the next roundabout at the bottom, turn right to Portreath, then right again onto the B3303. Continue on this road for a couple of miles, past Treasure Park, through Bridge and into the village of Portreath. Keep on the road through the village of Portreath. Keep on the road through the village and past the beach on your right and continue up the hill out of the village and take the next road on your left to Pool and Illogan. Go past Forthvean and Gwel an Mor is the next drive on your left, with a low white wall and palm tree lined drive.
Train to Redruth and bus to Portreath.
