Boscastle, Cornwall

Description

The picturesque National Trust fishing village of Boscastle received international coverage in August 2004 after suffering Britain's worst flash flood in half a century. Today you will be hard pressed to find much evidence of that devastating event and with its Mediaeval core and distinctive harbour, Boscastle remains one of Cornwall's most romantic places. It is a village steeped in history, associated with authors and artists who have been inspired by its remoteness and its rugged beauty.

Bocastle's history is filled with drama and interest from the building of the 11th century castle, which gave the village its name ( the site of which can be visited) through to the 19th century heyday of its busy harbour and the coming of the first Victorian tourists. You can get to know the hidden parts of Boscastle using the Village trail leaflet or just relax and take in the local atmosphere.

One of the best kept secrets of the Boscastle area is its gorgeous churches. Most date from Norman times, but some are built over ancient sites, founded by the Celtic Saints after whom they are dedicated. You can walk to them, via the enchanting Valency Valley and Minster woods and the wild expanse of Willapark, the site of an Iron age cliff castle.

Boscastle has a great selection of shops, galleries, and a pottery where you can watch the potter at work, and the famous Museum of Witchcraft. There are is a good choice of pubs, restaurants and tea rooms to suit everyone taste and pocket. There are fishing trips out from the harbour as well as guided walks around the area. The Museum of Witchcraft is situated near the harbour and houses the world's largest collection of witchcraft related artefacts and regalia. The museum has been located in Boscastle for over forty years and is amongst Cornwall's most popular museums.

In the evenings live music can be found on certain nights throughout the year in the three local pubs. Visitors are always welcome and it's a good chance to meet up with the locals. An annual autumn Food, Arts and Crafts festival celebrates the best of Cornish cuisine an creativity.
