Camborne Trevithick Day is an annual celebration of the heritage and mining heritage of the area, with the focus on Richard Trevithick, pioneer of high pressure steam - power. This takes the form of a community festival of free entertainment in the main streets of Camborne, which are closed for the day - 30th April 2011.
The Bal Maidens & Miners Dance takes place at 10.15am.
Approximately 240 children from nine local schools, are traditionally dressed of Trevithick's time. Bal Maidens worked at the top of the mines, helping to operate such things as the tin-stamps, which crushed the ore brought to the surface by the Miners. The children's dance is accompanied by miniature steam engines
Trevithick's Dance takes place at 2.30pm.
Dancers are people who live or work in Camborne. They are dressed in the Cornish colours of yellow and black. The dancers were traditionally followed up the main streets by steam engines of all shapes and sizes. The steam parade is now a separate attraction.
Both dances are led by Camborne Town Band, playing the specially arranged 'Trevithick's Tune'.
