Five Things to do on the Lizard Peninsula

The Lizard is the most southerly part of the UK and is a unique place with a temperate micro-climate. The exotic plants and mild weather make it seem like you are on a tropical island! There are pretty coves and beautiful sandy beaches, olde-worlde pubs and charming thatched cottages, traditional fishing villages and unique wildlife to be discovered.

Walk the South West Coast Path from Kennack Sands to Cadgwith Cove
This circular walk begins at Kennack Sands where serpentine boulders cover the beach and follows the coastal path to the picturesque Cadgwith Cove, dotted with cute thatched cottages and fishing boats. Here you can stop for a stroll on the beach and have some lunch in the Cadgwith Cove Inn before continuing on your walk. The route back to Kennack Sands goes inland to Ruan Minor church and returns via Poltesco Mill, Kugger and follows a footpath across the fields to Gwendreath, finally following a woodland path back down to the coastal path by Kennack Sands. A great way to spend a sunny day on The Lizard!

Meet Local Marine Life with Kennack Diving
You can admire the glistening water surrounding The Lizard whilst coastal walking, sun bathing on the beach or even by taking a dip in the sea. But to really experience the beauty of the Cornish waters, you need to dive beneath the surface of the water. Kennack Diving, which is the most southerly dive centre in mainland Britain, offers a full range of PADI courses, bespoke guided dives, air, equipment hire etc. If you’re aged between 8-80, reasonably fit and happy in the water, you can try out the equipment in the safe environment of the centre’s own heated swimming pool. Anyone over the age of 12 years can then follow this up with a trial dive in the sea for an unforgettable encounter with marine life, with qualified instructors. Go on, jump in!

Visit Cornwall’s most southerly land lighthouse
The Lizard Lighthouse has been guiding ships safely home for over 260 years. Climb the lighthouse to the top to discover breathtaking views of the Atlantic ocean, listen to Lighthouse Keepers stories, send a message using Morse Code and power up a fog horn and let it blast. After you climb back down to Earth, why not make your way over to The Lizard Point and go wildlife watching? Use binoculars and telescopes to look out to sea; you may be lucky enough to spot grey seals, dolphins, porpoise, sunfish and the occasional whale and basking shark from the watchpoint. You may also come across some seabirds such as gannets, puffins and Cornish choughs. Experts from the National Trust will be on hand to help you identify the wildlife!

Explore the picturesque Cornish fishing village of Coverack
Coverack is an unspoilt Cornish fishing village with a small sand and pebble beach on the eastern coast of the Lizard peninsula. Coverack has a quintessentially Cornish fishing harbour, a beautiful sandy bay with rock pools to explore, lovely gift shops, delicious restaurants and a traditional pub. Coverack is steeped in character and smuggling history and has a small walled harbour that you can walk around and sit to relax, taking in the gorgeous views. Coverack is also a great spot for windsurfing and kayaking.
