The St Mawes Fish Festival and St Mawes Harbour Race, put together by local individuals and businesses involves local fisherman, chefs from the nearby pubs, fish merchants and the sailing club who organize a working boats race. St Mawes shows visitors exactly what the fisherman catch, and thanks to local chefs, how it tastes.
Local fishermen sell their freshly landed catch from the stalls and there’s a variety of cooked seafood available including seafood paella, barbequed fish fillets and scallops. In addition there’s cooking demonstrations and tastings throughout the day, accompanied by expert fishmongers on hand with tips for filleting and preparing the perfect fish and since no festival is complete without music, traditional local bands will be keeping the party in tune.
The quay at St Mawes is transformed into a bustling scene, filled with the sights and smells of delicious seafood being prepared, cooked, eaten and sold and it provides a great opportunity to get the low down on fishing in Cornwall as there are plenty of chances to ask questions to the men and women who work in the industry. As well as sampling tasty locally-produced food, you can also watch the St Mawes Harbour Race, which takes place in the afternoon when beautiful and historic working boats compete on the water.
