Truro Victorian Christmas Market
Truro Victorian Christmas Market
Celebrating ten glorious years, the VCM goes from strength to strength. The centrepiece and highlight of the Christmas activities in Truro, there are over 65 traders, producers and exhibitors at this six day market on Lemon Quay Piazza in the centre of the City. Housed in a huge, heated marquee the event attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year to see the stall-holders in their costumes, sample the wares and buy unique gifts.
We split the marquee into two distinct zones; the Food Hall with meat, cheese, chocolates, preserves, liqueurs, ales etc (basically, everything you could want food wise over Christmas), and the Arts, Crafts and Gifts Hall which has clothing, jewellery, artwork, pottery, books and much more for your present buying delight. Most of our traders make their products themselves and will be happy to talk to you about production processes and, in the case of food, food miles, origin and traceability.
This is the Deborah Martyn flagship event of the year and we are fortunate enough to be picky about which traders we let into this event. Our choices are made on quality, both of the product and of the stall-holder. You won't find any "moaning minnies" at this event but you will find courteous, professional artisans who are pleased to see you. Since we started this business in 2003 we have based our whole ethos in providing events to the public where quality and value go hand in hand with a level of customer service that seems to have all but disappeared from modern retail. Nowhere is this ethos more evident than the Victorian Market.
Each year, the Mayor of Truro judges the best dressed trader and best decorated stall (look for the certificates on the stalls to see who's won!). Prizes are awarded to the winners with our friends at Marks and Spencer' donating the first prize in each category to the lucky exhibitors. This year we are happy to welcome the current Mayor of Truro, Mr Loic Rich, to the duties of judge.
There is a large cafe and seating area in the marquee where you can have a cup of tea and a piece of cake, or a full meal, while you rest your feet. On average, most customers spend around two hours in the marquee doing their shopping. We do notice that many people come back day after day to get even more food and presents (don't worry, there are plenty of cashpoints nearby and many of our exhibitors accept card payments).
Truro late night shopping is on the Wednesdays in the run up to Christmas and the marquee will be staying open untill 9.00pm on Wednesday 10th December. This is a great time for families as there is always some form of street theatre entertainment in the marquee. In 2013 we had the Stiltskin Theatre Company who fascinated, scared and entranced young and old alike as they walked around the marquee with their interactive performance art. Anyone who has been in the marquee when Camborne Youth Band march through playing Christmas carols will testify that the hairs on the back of their necks stand on end. It's truly magical and not to be missed and will be on Wednesday evening and Saturday (times to be confirmed)
If however, you prefer to take your time when shopping and not be crowded, the best times to visit are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Special arrangements are made for coach parties to visit during these quieter times and coach companies and trip organisers can contact us for further details by clicking here.
Finally, for your convenience, you can order your Christmas meat supplies from our butcher (The Kernow Sausage Co.) and pick it up the weekend before Christmas at our Last Chance Market (19-21 December).
