5 of the best summer firework displays

‘Magic in the Skies’ at Land’s End by Simon Cook

Here in Cornwall firework displays aren’t just reserved for cold winter nights, you can get your fix of ohh and ahh action when the air is still balmy and the skies (fingers crossed) clear…

Land’s End – Lan'd End 29 and 31 July and every Tues and Thurs throughout August

At the westernmost point of Cornwall there’s a pyrotechnic line-up lasting the whole summer. Every Tuesday and Thursday from the end of July and throughout August, the iconic Land’s End will stay open late for live music, entertainment and foodie treats, before the ‘Magic in the Skies’ fireworks ignite at dusk. And this is on top of six themed event days (expect smugglers, pirates and lots more). Phew, it’s going to be a busy summer!

Charlestown Regatta – Charlestown 31 July

Charlestown Regatta is a regatta with style. If fireworks themselves aren’t impressive enough this small village sets them to the atmospheric 1812 overture played by the talented Mount Charles Senior Band. Part of the Last Night at the Proms free concert. Expect goose pimples and more than a few wows.

St Michael’s Mount, Marazion – 12 August

For a visual spectacular get along to Marazion on 12 August. As dusk falls at 21.45 a dazzling array of fireworks will light up the skies to the impressive backdrop of St Michael’s Mount which rises dramatically from the bay. This bespoke event has been designed to be viewed from the mainland and marks the 60th anniversary of the unique partnership between the National Trust and the St Aubyn family who have lived in the castle on the Mount since the 1650s. The vibrant and stunning show will commence with the firing of the Mount’s own ceremonial canons and will culminate with a stunning finale that will fire from multiple points across the top of the Mount, illuminating the sky and bay all around.

Fowey Regatta – Fowey 23 August

This annual regatta, which offers a week long feast of entertainment and fun both on and off the water, always finishes with a bang. Join the crowds that line the scenic harbour and go ohh-ahh crazy as thousands of fireworks add sparkle to the waters. Other wow events on offer during the regatta are an exhilarating display by the Red Arrows, a vibrant carnival, live music and of course, the action on the water.

Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta – Falmouth 30 August

From 28-30 August, Falmouth will play host to 47 Tall Ships for three days of festivities before they showcase their finery in a Parade of Sail on 31 August and set off on a race to London. To celebrate their last night in port and to give them a grand farewell, a magnificent fireworks display, sponsored by Saga Cruises, will cast a myriad of colours across the harbour on 30 August, starting at 9.30pm. The best vantage points will be Custom House Quay, Events Square and the terraces overlooking the harbour – make sure you bagsie your place!
