The summer holidays are in full swing and Cornwall is the place to be! The Fish and Chip shops have queues out the door and the local pubs changing yet another barrel of cider. It’s a time to party, to enjoy time away with the family, and hopefully soak up some sunshine!
All across Cornwall there are restaurants, café’s, bars and attractions, all offering a great selection of locally produced food and drink. Here’s a selection of what’s on offer this month…
Family Feast Nights at The Headland, Newquay
We know that after a long day exploring hidden coves, splashing along the shoreline and fishing in rockpools feeding hungry tummies needs to be a stress-free affair, so why not come and join us for our family feast nights? Afternoon teas with fantastic views… and fizz!
At the Polurrian Hotel we’ve had a shuffle around of the Vista Restaurant. We’ve changed the comfy sofa seating at the bottom of the restaurant to the top level. This has meant maximising the lower level seating with the most incredible views over the Atlantic and Mounts Bay. Our Vista Menu offers great value with delicious options for lunches and dinners.

The Bowgie’s Ale and Cider Festival
Held every year over the August Bank Holiday weekend, do not miss The Bowgie’s Ale and Cider Festival! Their incredible location on West Pentire headland overlooking Crantock beach near Newquay, is transformed into a mini festival site for 4 days of ale & cider fuelled fun. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, expect a weekend of fantastic live music, awesome food, over 60 different Cornish ales & ciders, fundraising activities, the Rattler Cider truck, fireworks & lots more. High Tea in the Garden…
Pinetum Gardens in St Austell has thrown down the gauntlet, offering what it claims are the best value high teas and dressed crabs on the gardens circuit.
The attraction, off the A390 just east of St Austell, is offering a full afternoon tea comprising two scones, Rodda's cream, local preserves, 12 mini sandwiches, macaroons, cakes, and tea or coffee for £13.95 per person or £18.95 with prosecco.
The luxury continues with their special dressed crabs, full of brown and white crab meat, sourced from Fowey and served with chips and salad for just £11.95.

On 25 August, Penlee Park Theatre will be throwing open its doors to three of the finest local food and drinks producers in Penzance. Polgoon Vineyard & Orchard, Crown Brewery and Coco. This promises to be a long and relaxed summer lunch of delicious food by Rachel and Andy from Coco accompanied by fine wines, ciders, beers and five hours of live music from bands including Jumping Out Jazz.

Free desserts at The Greenbank Hotel
The two AA rosette awarded Water’s Edge restaurant in Falmouth is running an early bird dinner offer throughout this summer. When guests enjoy a two course meal, their dessert will be complimentary. Tables must be booked before 6.30pm and ‘earlybird’ must be quoted. The award-winning restaurant is open every day to non-residents, with daily changing chef recommendations, the freshest seafood, and delectable puddings.
Harbourside restaurant launches Cornwall’s newest dining space
Diners can now experience Cornwall’s newest dining space as Amélies, Porthleven adds a permanent wood and glass terrace to the restaurant. The space has been created to compliment the clean and simple styling of the existing restaurant. There’s a dedicated bar and seating for 35-40 guests, or room for 70-80 standing for drinks receptions and other events.
Amélies has also unveiled new chef Donato Dondiego – a bona fide Italian who has cooked all over the world, including owning his own restaurant in South Africa. Donato has relocated from London with his family to bring authentic seafood and Mediterranean dishes to Porthleven.
The terrace is the latest step in the evolution of the popular Porthleven restaurant, which relaunched in 2014 with a new look and then appeared on Alex Polizzi: Chefs on Trial on BBC 2 in 2015. Last year Amélies was named in The Times as one of the Top 20 places in the UK to eat seafood by the sea as well as winning a Highly Commended in the Cornwall Tourism Awards and Best Cornish Sunday Roast in the Cornwall Life Food and Drink awards.
Lazy Sunday Afternoons and an evening of Cider at The Vineyard
Every Sunday until 10th September head to Knightor’s Portscatho Vineyard for a lazy Sunday afternoon amongst the vines. Open 12-6pm you can pop in throughout the day to buy Knightor’s award winning Cornish wines or simply sit and enjoy the big views over the Roseland with a glass or two from the barn wine bar. Want to know more about what's in the glass? At 2pm each Sunday they will be running a tutored wine tasting. Choose to stay on for lunch and enjoy a main and pud for £12.95. Also, for those who missed out last year, Knightor are again showcasing Fowey Valley Cider’s wonderful range of Champagne method cider, vinegar and apples. It’s all happening on Friday 11th August when on arrival you will be welcomed with a cider cocktail followed by a feast of crab, wood fired porchetta and a beautiful apple dessert to finish. Plans are to dine alfresco in the courtyard should the weather hold up. Pre-dinner at 5pm you can choose to join Knightor’s winemakers tour and gain a real insight into how their wine is made. This weeks tour will focus on English sparkling wine and will finish with a tutored tasting.

Did somebody mention Fish?
Celebrate all things fishy in Britain’s premier fishing port, Newlyn, where you can satisfy your appetite with the best seafood you’re likely to find anywhere and help to raise money for the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. For fish fans, you can see one of the biggest displays of fish, watch a rolling programme of cookery demos by top local chefs and watch the Cornish Fishmonger of the Year competition. There are three music stages, plenty of boats including luggers, gigs, fishing boats, lifeboats and jet skis, a DVD show, lots of arts and crafts, the Fish Tales Tent with some of the best local story-tellers and there is plenty of fun for kids with bouncy castles, face-painting, crazy theatre and the ever-popular Fishy Trail.
It all happens on August Bank Holiday Monday, in and around the harbour in Newlyn, just west of Penzance. From the A30, follow the signs to the Newlyn Fish Festival and look out for temporary car parks. Doors open at 09:00 and close at 17:00. Admission is £5. Under 16s are free.

Cornwall’s Camel Valley wines were on the menu at the State Banquet held at Buckingham Palace in honour of the King and Queen of Spain in early July. Camel Valley was also served at a star studded reception to celebrate the Duchess of Cornwall’s birthday at Clarence House the following day. Sam and Bob Lindo were lucky enough to be invited to Clarence House for the birthday reception hosted by the Prince of Wales. Said Bob, ‘it was very exciting and I was lucky enough to also meet Dame Maggie Smith who invited me over to tell me how much she enjoyed our wines.
The wines served were 2013 Camel Valley Pinot Noir rose at Buckingham Palace and 2013 Camel Valley ‘Cornwall’ brut at Clarence House. To taste these and other Camal Valley wines take a trip to their vineyard just outside Bodmin in mid Cornwall.
