Cornwall named best destination

Cornwall has been named the Best UK Holiday Destination in the British Travel Awards 2016 for the EIGHTH year in a row!

Having first secured the title in 2009, Cornwall has enjoyed unrivalled success once again by claiming the majority of the public vote to outshine competition from across the country and hold onto its well-worn crown.

The enviable feat was announced last night (23 November) at a Gala Awards ceremony, held in London and attended by close to a thousand travel industry people.

“Well done Cornwall! To be named as the nation’s favourite holiday destination for eight years is a truly incredible achievement,” comments Malcolm Bell, Chief Executive of Visit Cornwall. “Each and every person involved in tourism in Cornwall should be proud of this award. It represents strength in our product, brand and future and is a powerful message to be able to shout across the world.

“Thank you to everyone that has contributed to Cornwall’s success and of course, to those who voted.”

Making it an even more impressive feat for Cornwall the Lost Gardens of Heligan also won Best UK Leisure Attraction, closely followed by the Eden project with silver, and Bude was victorious as Best UK Coastal Resort for a second year.

“We couldn’t be more delighted with this award. All the vision and local investment that is going into the Bude area – creating new places to eat, places to stay and exciting things to do for visitors to Bude, is clearly appealing to day visitors and holiday visitors alike,” said Mark Hibbard, Tourism Officer and a Director of Bude Area Tourist Board.

“The fact that this award is voted for by visitors makes it all the more special. We represent many Bude tourism businesses working together to provide a thriving and continually improving visitor destination – we look forward to welcoming even more visitors in 2017!”

British Travel Awards’ chief executive Lorraine Barnes Burton added: “Competition was fierce this year with more companies entering the competition than ever before - but ultimately it is the travelling public who decide the winners by voting for the travel companies they consider the best in the business.  The British Travel Awards is the largest awards programme in the UK and to win is truly an accolade and testament to the great products and services travel companies offer to their customers.”
