Discover Cornwall with Kneehigh's 'Walk with Me' App
For 35 years the award-winning Cornish Theatre company Kneehigh have created vigorous, popular and challenging theatre, with a joyful anarchy. This summer they have created a free story walk app ‘Walk with Me’. Walk With Me has been created in collaboration with Cornwall One Parent Support, Treviglas School, Bodmin College, Sithney Green Senior Girl Guides, Why Don’t You, Mevagissey Museum, Newquay Heritage Archive, Bodmin Town Museum, Helston Museum and King Edward Mine.
The app enables you to explore Cornwall in a unique new way. Inspired by the company’s Rambles programme, Kneehigh Associate Artist, poet and writer Anne Marie Murphy began walking roads less travelled collecting stories and memories of people she met along the way. From the rather particular pasty seller to the disgruntled surfer, these real-life stories have been shaped and embellished into amusing and informative dramatic dialogues and performed by Kneehigh company members, allowing the listener to enjoy a living landscape through rich and vivid story telling. The stories have been reimagined and sometimes widely exaggerated to create a collection for the app.
If you are walking GPS triggers specific stories at certain times which is a great way to keep everyone entertained as you discover the region. You can also listen to the stories from the comfort of your own home in 'armchair mode'. So far there are story walks for Mevagissey, Perranporth and Newquay. Walks in Bodmin, Helston and Redruth are planned to be added to the app in 2018.
The stories have been voiced by local young people and Kneehigh actors. Dawn French has also recorded a number of the stories which have been made into ‘Moving Postcards’. The postcards are six of the stories brought to life by animation, images or film. It enables you to be able to experience a living landscape rooted in real people and places.
The app is simple to download and a lovely listen, so grab your phone and enjoy a walk with Kneehigh.
