Family run self-catering accommodation in St Germans

Railholiday Ltd offers self-catering accommodation in beautifully restored and sympathetically converted railway carriages on two sites. The Victorian carriages the Old Luggage Van, Mevy, Millpool and The Travelling Post Office are situated in the picturesque village of St Germans in South East Cornwall, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We also have a 1950's carriage in Hayle, just like the one on Harry Potter.

All carriages offer all the comforts of home, whilst retaining many of their original features. In St Germans The Travelling Post Office and the Old Luggage Van has their own enclosed gardens, while Millpool and Mevy have dedicated decks and gardens in a more communal space. Guests also have the use of ten acres of woodland. Millpool is fully accessible for wheelchair users and has an NAS M3 grading. Walkers, cyclists, children and dogs are all welcomed. As winners of the Visit England gold award for the most sustainable tourism business of 2016 our holidays are green in all the best ways; from  fresh flowers and Cornish goodies in our welcome pack to bespoke locally crafted features, beautifully landscaped pollinator friendly gardens and a train service at your doorstep. Harvey in Hayle is set in half an acre of enclosed wildlife gardens. We offer £25 off to guests arriving by public transport and have an EV car charging point if you need one.

The Old Luggage Van is sited on a delightful site at the western end of St Germans Station. Quirky, cosy and charming, it nestles amongst a garden of spring bulbs and camellias, while it’s double bed and wood-burning stove provide a relaxing base from which to explore Devon and Cornwall. It has been featured on BBC Breakfast News as well as in several local and national newspapers and magazines. The Old Luggage Van was Railholiday's first venture and it’s success and popularity led to the conversion of our other coaches. The Old Luggage Van will accommodate a maximum of two.

The Travelling Post Office sits at the other end of the station, adjoining the far east end of the up-line platform. Featured on the BBC's Great British Railway Journeys with Michael Portillo, this Victorian coach is a real gem. Clerestory windows run along the full length of the coach and give a really special feeling of light and space, while retaining the cosiness of a wooden coach. Children love the bunkroom with its tiny windows looking out over the railway, and the garden is a mass of roses in the summer. This carriage dates back to 1889 and was hauled by the City of Truro when she broke the 100mph barrier in 1904. A wood-burner, with an unlimited supply of fuel from our woodland, makes the Travelling Post Office great for a winter retreat. The Travelling Post Office can accommodate up to six, using the double sofa bed in the lounge.

Mevy, A gem of Victorian splendour, sleeps up to five and is converted to the highest environmental and comfort standards. The first class bedroom has gilded mahogany and maple panels and Italian velvet walls. The second bedroom has a handmade bespoke triple bunk bed, perfect for children. Rather than looking over the railway Mevy has stunning views over the rolling countryside beyond.  The coach is fully insulated and centrally heated, making it cosy at any time of the year. Fully furnished with hypoallergenic bedding, we have a no pets policy in Mevy, making it suitable for allergy sufferers.

Millpool, is our first fully accessible wheelchair friendly carriage. Millpool is designed for two and pets are welcome. For maximum flexibility it has an option of either a single profiling bed or a double. There is a small folding sofa bed in the lounge for traveling companions, a generous wet room, electric recliner and a whole range of mobility aids available on request. There are stunning views over rolling hills and a sun terrace. We are awaiting grading for accessibility, but have made sure our design complies with the M3i guidelines.

St Germans Station was built in 1858 to a design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and although the main railway station building is now lived in by your hosts, the platform is still in use and is served by over 20 stopping trains per day. The railway siding on which the Travelling Post Office now sits was used for loading agricultural produce. Guests have a key for their own private access onto the platform.

The Village and Surrounding Area - St Germans is a delightful gentle village, with a pub and community shop at its heart. The Eden Project, Falmouth, St Ives and Plymouth are all easily accessible by train. Not far to the south are the popular and historic fishing villages of Looe and Polperro, while Whitsand Bay and its miles of golden sandy beaches are a short drive or taxi ride away. St Germans is also home to the magnificent Port Eliot Estate, which opens to the public annually between March and June, and also hosts the renowned Port Eliot Festival every July. Their highlights include woodland and riverside walks, walled gardens and within the Grade 1 listed house the Round Room, with a striking mural by Robert Lenkiewicz, who was a friend of the family.

Special Offers: We offer a £25 cash-back incentive to guests arriving by public transport. We also regularly run Short Break Specials in spring and autumn/winter months.

Environmentally Friendly Accommodation: All carriages are run in an environmentally friendly way, with renewably sourced energy and full recycling facilities. Our prices include all fuel and logs. If you’re looking to explore Devon and Cornwall Railholiday offers a sustainable yet comfortable holiday experience.

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty:  With its deep wooded valleys, rivers and streams it is no surprise this area has been designated as an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and also as a Site of Special Scientific Interest on account of the diversity of wildlife around the river Lynher.

Ten Acres of Woodland: Guests in St Germans have unlimited access to our woodland that runs alongside the railway, only five minutes walk away from the carriage. In the spring and early summer the ground is carpeted with wild garlic and bluebells. It makes a great place to nature watch as the woods is home to badgers, foxes, the occasional wild deer, buzzards and many other species of wildlife. New for 2018 is a snowdrop walk, with six types of snowdrops, five named cultivars and several large patches of native snowdrops. It is our intention to add more named varieties each year.

Children Welcome: We have a play area for children, with ride on toys and rope swing. We also have a games room with air hockey and football tables, lots of toys for all ages and a good range of family DVDs. There is also an excellent village play area and children are welcomed at the local pub. Adventurous children will love making dens in the woods. And of course a trip to nearby Looe never fails to please!

Dogs (and other pets) Welcome: Your dog will thank you for the free range of our ten acres of woodland, although of course there are many other reasons for dogs to love their Railholiday. All gardens are fully enclosed and there are some wonderful walks from the carriages into the neighbouring countryside. Add to this the fabulous range of dog friendly beaches in the area. In spring dogs also have the benefit of Port Eliot on the doorstep, which has a special weekly dog day in which dogs are free to run wild across the parkland.

Rail Enthusiasts Welcome: For the madcap rail enthusiast this accommodation is heaven – great views of the passing trains and a fantastic rail service. For those less enamoured, be reassured that there are not usually any trains overnight – you will be surprised at what a peaceful location it is.

Disability and Accessibility:  We do our best to accommodate everyone within the confines of the accommodation, and with our new carriage Millpool being wheelchair accessible we hope that we have something for everyone. Autistic children and adults are very welcome. We have a smoke alarm for the deaf, available at no extra charge on request. Guide dogs for the blind are free. For those with limited mobility the Travelling Post Office and Mevy have ramped access and although they have not been fitted with mobility aids, once inside the accommodation is all on one level and a toilet frame can be provided. The Old Luggage Van is unsuited to those with mobility problems.

Excellent Public Transport Links:  You couldn’t wish for a better place to spend a holiday using trains and buses, which is why we offer guests £25 cashback if they arrive by train. Thirteen stopping trains towards Devon and the same into Cornwall serve the station on weekdays, with a reduced but adequate weekend service, and there is also a Western Greyhound bus service to Looe and Plymouth.

Friday Changeover: Our changeover day is on Friday but we are often happy to be flexible during the off peak periods.

Railholiday in Hayle:  We also have a holiday carriage in Hayle which is also suited for larger groups – please visit our website for details.

New for 2018 is our carriage Millpool, perfect for wheelchair and non wheelchair users alike. Beautiful views over rolling hills and comfortable, centrally heated accommodation with lots of character. We love the ducket windows and the hand painted glass panels in the bathroom. There is a HSL riser recliner chair and the option of swapping the double bed with a single profiling bed. We have been awarded an NAS M3 rating for this carriage.
