Discover Hayle

Hayle surrounds a beautiful estuary on the edge of St Ives Bay in West Cornwall. Archaeological excavations of Greek and Roman pottery suggest it was an important trading port for tin thousands of years ago and during the industrial revolution copper smelting flourished in the town, the importance of which saw the town’s harbour and townscape being granted World Heritage Site status in 2006. 

Hayle was the first town in Cornwall to be awarded "Walkers Are Welcome" status which means the footpaths and trails around the town are well maintained and well-marked and with plenty of rugged countryside around, it’s an ideal place to pull on your hiking boots.

To the west lie 3 miles of golden sands and, with a constant breeze off the Atlantic, the area is well-known for its surfing and wind sailing. Hayle’s wide estuary, managed by the RSPB and the UK’s most south westerly, is an important stopping off point for migratory birds.

  • Visit Hayle’s Oral History Centre, situated in the Old Brewery Offices, where you can become absorbed in tales told by true Hayle residents about life long ago in the town. Take a look at the photographic display and anecdotes written by local people. 
  • The Hayle Estuary Reserve incorporates Copperhouse Pool, built in 1788 which is bordered by the subtropical King George V Memorial Walk. Take a stroll here and see the astonishing display of flowers and plants.
  • If surfing is your bag, Gwithian is the place to go. This three mile long beach is a surfer’s paradise where you can hire wetsuits, surf boards and grab a lesson or two from the local surf school 
  • For a relaxing day on the beach with family and friends, you could also try Hayle Towans Beach and Godrevy Beach, perfect for messing around in the rock pools
  • Take the Hayle town trail and discover more about the town’s heritage with an intriguing and enjoyable walk, make sure you pick up a traditional Cornish pasty along the way
