Discover Porthleven

Porthleven in Cornwall exudes Cornish charm and tradition. Set in the middle of a huge sweeping bay, the beach at Porthleven is ideal for a relaxing family holiday. Porthleven has arguably the most impressive harbour in Cornwall,  construction commenced during Napoleonic times and some sources state that it was built with the aid of French prisoners of war. Small fishing boats land their daily catch in Porthleven, much of which is sold in Porthleven cafes and restaurants and the award winning Quayside fishmongers. The harbour was completed in 1825

Things to do in Porthleven

  • For the experienced surfers head to Porthleven beach with its 3 miles of glorious golden sand. Popular for its fantastic surf, visitors can watch some of the most bravest adrenaline seeking surfers venture out to sea
  • When the tide is out, stroll along to Loe Bar, Porthleven's neighbouring beach 2 miles away, with the largest natural fresh water lake in Cornwall, from the sea. Please note that waves here can be strong, not ideal for bathing
  • Visit Penrose Estate, a mixture of rich farmland and woodland around Loe Pool, through which there are many paths to explore. Take some time to visit the church of St Winwalloe, which huddles low against the wind in the lee of a rocky headland at Church Cove. Either side of this headland are two sandy coves and the Gunwalloe valley reedbed provides a haven for a wide variety of birdlife
  • Stroll along the harbourside and listen to the gentle lapping of the sea or walk along the coast path and find stunning scenery as the sea crashes on the rocks below
  • Walk part of the  South West Coast Path from Porthleven to The Lizard, this stretch without a doubt is unique and exceptionally beautiful. The path is fairly level and easy beyond Porthleven, but then becomes narrow in places with some steep ascents and descents
  • Enjoy some delicous seafood from Porthleven harbour or enjoy a Cornish cream tea, traditional Cornish pasty or even some Roskilly ice cream
  • Stroll around the village's local art and crafts shops
