Poldark experiences

Koru Kayaking

Like everyone else, at Visit Cornwall HQ, we're really enjoying the much-anticipated BBC remake of the hit 1970s drama Poldark.

The trailer
The first episode appeared on our screens 8 March on BBC One and returns every Sunday at 9pm until the end of April. See the full Poldark trailer here.

The story
Based on Winston Graham’s acclaimed novels set in Cornwall in the 18th Century, Poldark tells the story of Ross Poldark, an Army officer who returns to England after fighting in the American War of Independence to discover that his fiancee Elizabeth had believed him dead and has since married his cousin. Poldark then marries his maid, Demelza but is forever torn between the two women.

Make like Ross and Demelza and step into the 18th Century world of mining, smuggling and romance with one these Poldark experiences.

Discover the mining landscape on a kayaking adventure
Take to the sea for a two hour kayak adventure with Koru Kayaking around St Agnes Head, a Poldark film location and part of the incredible World Heritage Cornish Mining landscape. Paddle your way through archways and into caves, and with a unique perspective from the water, see the miners paths cut into the cliff-tops and the now open iron and tin seams at Cligga Cliffs.

Ride the Bodmin Moor Poldark Trail on horse back
Saddle up and experience Bodmin Moor on horseback with Hallagenna Riding and Cottage Holidays who provided stabling and accommodation for the stunt riders and horses while filming on the moors. Hallegenna’s brand new ‘Poldark Trail’ takes in some of the locations visited during filming, including Rough Tor and Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall, and you will experience countryside and terrain ridden by those filming both the original and the forthcoming Poldark series.

Marine wildlife safari of Poldark film locations
Enjoy a two hour seal cove safari with Newquay Sea Safaris and see the marine wildlife that is abundant in Poldark film locations such as Holywell beach and Porthcothan. As you travel the beautiful rugged north Cornwall coastline, home to nearly third of the worlds population of world rare grey seals and even rarer Celtic Bottlenose dolphins, you will spot marine wildlife and learn interesting facts about the area!

Learn to make a Cornish pasty
A staple to any miners diet was the humble Cornish pasty – now protected by the EU. Learn the art of making this regional delicacy with a pasty making workshop where you’ll get to grips with crimping, discover the traditional recipe and of course, try Cornwall’s tastiest export. You’ll also come away clued up on the history of the pasty and with a new appreciation as to why it is synonymous with the mining story of Poldark.

Visit the namesake
Visit the TV series namesake, Poldark Mine and take an underground tour of the mine, the only complete underground mine open to the public in Cornwall and Devon. Go down 100 feet through narrow passageways and experience the dark and at times treacherous, conditions that miners faced every day. The underground scenes were filmed at here and a number of the artifacts were used as props.

Walk through Poldark land
Pull on your walking boots and join local walking guide, Paul Simmons from WalkitCornwall, for a stomp through some of the mining areas that starred as outdoor film locations for Poldark. Experience the spectacular cliff-edge mine workings in a circular walk around Botallack Count House in west Cornwall, or take-in the beauty of Wheal Coates which sits in a breathtaking position on St Agnes Head.
