A significant number of English Heritage sites reopened as of the 4th July. These include Tintagel Castle and Pendennis Castle. More sites will open in August including St Mawes Castle, Launceston Castle and Restormel Castle and tickets will go on sale in early July. Visitor numbers will be limited to help keep everyone safe and stick to social distancing measures. You will need to book your visit in advance. If you are an English Heritage member you will still need to book your visit but your ticket will be free.
Situated on a headland with breathtaking views out to sea, Pendennis Castle is one of Henry VIII's finest coastal fortresses. The castle has defended Cornwall since Tudor times, and played a vital role during the two World Wars.
Today as you explore the picturesque castle, experience life as a Tudor gunner guarding the shores. Race to the upper gun room, try out the replica cannon, and climb to the top of the keep for unrivalled views over Falmouth. As you admire 360-degree panoramas, look out for sea-faring vessels of many kinds and a huge range of wildlife, birds and coastal creatures.
During the First World War, Pendennis became the headquarters of 'Fortress Falmouth' - a story retold through displays and moving first-hand accounts. Discover the story of John Glasson Thomas, a Cornish soldier whose letters offer a very special record of one man's Great War.
The castle was called into action once again during WWII and resumed control of coastal defences. Costumed characters guide you through the tunnels and straight into the drama of war in the underground magazines. Spot enemies on the horizon in the Battery Observation Post and listen in to conversations between the commander and his gun crews.
Pendennis has an exciting programme of events throughout the year, from medieval jousts to Halloween tours, and you won't want to miss the thunderous daily firing of a working gun from the castle's collection (Apr - Oct).
