An Italian ambience is set to stir at Watergate as BIRRA MORETTI gets ready to take over The Beach Hut for a week in September. And upping the energy on the sand, Deep Dish Beach Volleyball feeds the action with a weekend of high-octane matches.
Bringing a taste of Italy to Cornish shores
9 - 15 September
As summer winds down, the action hots up this September, as the essence of La Dolce Vita comes to Watergate Bay, with premium Italian beer makers BIRRA MORETTI and Deep Dish Beach Volleyball bringing their flavours and skills to see out summertime.
From 9–15 September, The Beach Hut will see great food with a nod to the Italian coast, paired with fine beer and a prime position to watch the waves or a match or two, as the Atlantic-view restaurant takes on an unfiltered Italian air.
Born on the colourful coast of Italy – where the sea provides the backdrop to slow lunches and long afternoons, family gatherings and quality time spent together – BIRRA MORETTI’s takeover at The Beach Hut is a chance to celebrate its newest offering, BIRRA MORETTI Sale Di Mare, a sea salt-spiked beer.
Bringing the essence of the Italian shores, Beach Hut guests will enjoy a guest-curated menu as part of the takeover, toasting the arrival of BIRRA MORETTI Sale Di Mare, which will be served on draught and by the bottle; as well as a visual takeover, using everything from BIRRA MORETTI coasters to bar stools, deck chairs to umbrellas.
Unfiltered, hazy and designed to be enjoyed with food, BIRRA MORETTI Sale Di Mare is a full-bodied beer with notes of citrus and pine. But its pièce de résistance (or pezzo forte) comes from the saline kick of Italian sea salt – making it the ideal accompaniment for long lunches washed down with a salty kick of Italian beer, then leaning back and watching the action unfold on the beach.
Guests can taste their way through a menu showcasing Italian grazing plates and authentic solo dishes too good to share. Start with arancini and authentic farinata, before tucking into fritto misto doused in lemon, smashed meatballs in brioche, steak tagliata marinated in rosemary and Ligurian fish stew.
Diners will also receive a small complimentary BIRRA MORETTI Sale Di Mare beer at the start of their meal in The Beach Hut to whet their appetite and stoke the spirit of the ‘divine coast’.
Extending the Italian experience, Watergate is offering guests the chance to stay and dine as part of a brand-new overnight offer. Starting at £385 a night, guests can head to the Bay, settle into their choice of room, and make use of everything the hotel has to offer — from Swim Club, to free Kids’ Zone sessions — before pulling up a chair at a three-course Beach Hut dinner. Bellissimo.
Deep Dish beach volleyball
13th - 15th September
Crowning the takeover, over the weekend of 13–15 September, Watergate Bay Hotel and Deep Dish welcome some of the best volleyball players the UK has to offer, as they compete to win the title of King or Queen of the Bay. This first-of-its-kind tournament is destined to be one of the most impressive Beach Volleyball rallies in British history.
A free spectator event, produced by Watergate Bay Hotel and Deep Dish – a team known for running heavyweight volleyball tournaments such as the UK Beach Tour finals and Commonwealth Games Qualifier – this tournament is expected to welcome crowds, as eight of the best male and female players in the UK battle it out. The highest-scoring players will be crowned King and Queen of the Bay, taking home a £1,000 cash prize.
Beyond the matches and tournament on Saturday 14 September, Deep Dish will be on hand to help onlookers try out the game and find their own volleyball groove with free ‘give it a go’ sessions on Friday and Sunday. Expert coaches will deliver mini sessions for all ages and skill levels, opening up centre court for the public to get involved and igniting passions for the game.
Professional commentators, good tunes, low-slung deck chairs and volleyball-based activities are all expected to keep the atmosphere buzzing throughout the weekend. And keeping spectators well-fed and with the Italian theme, BIRRA MORETTI are partnering with The Cornish Italian a local company who will be down on the sand, serving Italian small plates, as well as pouring glasses of ice-cold BIRRA MORETTI Sale Di Mare.
Watergate Bay invites everyone to head down to the beach, dig in for the day, grab a deckchair and watch the action unfold.
Artist in Residence
Topping up the bill during the week, local glass artist, Dreya Bennett will be Watergate Bay Hotel’s Artist in Residence between 9-12 September. No stranger to our shores, Dreya was a founding member of the Extreme Academy in the early 2000s, championing kite surfing and board sports in the Bay. She even kicked off an epic kitesurfing world record mission from Watergate, all the way to Ireland. A few years later she was back on her kite racing against a polo pony on the two-mile stretch of beach.
Channelling her love of the ocean into a different medium, Dreya is now just at home firing a kiln as she is in the water, creating fused glass artworks from her Cornish studio. This September guests will spot Dreya sketching and working around the hotel, drawing inspiration from shore and Watergate spaces to make a final glass artwork that embodies Watergate Bay.
