Something for everyone at Wheal Martyn
This summer and autumn at Wheal Martyn, we are holding a number of events for visitors to get involved with.
Our Clayworks exhibition is a celebration of artists Jenny Beavan and Stuart Thorn, open until 10th September followed by our exhibition on Charles Rashleigh, Charlestown and China Clay running from 22nd September through until 23rd December.
We also have a number of activities great for families this summer, including the weekly creative clay sessions, a hands on, clay inspired activity session running throughout the summer holidays until 1st September, as well as our ‘Earth Treasures Trail’ involving navigating through the Wheal Martyn site while collecting stamps and doing creative clay activities open until 10th September.
Our ‘Waste-not clothes swap fundraiser’ will also be happening on 14th September, hoping to inspire people to bring along unwanted items and gain some ‘new to them’ clothing, all while helping to raise money for Wheal Martyn Trust.
Additionally, we have a number of music nights running throughout August until November, as below:
The Mevagissey Quay Notes - 24th August
Acapella Moonshine - 2nd September

CLAYWORKS EXHIBITION
Jenny and Stuart have known each other since the launch of ‘CRAFT’, an IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE initiative, which was launched to make changes to the perceptions of Cornwall 1998.
Between them they have pursued many artistic connections linked to the china clay industry over the last 25 years: working commercially on particular bespoke commissions; instigating Cookworthy’s 300th anniversary, celebrating with a touring international exhibition; gleaning insights from on-site residences which have translated through their own personal expression in clay and paint, with joint exhibitions and workshops punctuating those 25 years.
This exhibition is a festive celebration of some of their achievements.
On display in the Roger Preston Gallery, Wheal Martyn, every day from 17 April until 10 September 2023.
Price included in general admission.

DAVEY AND DYER AT WHEAL MARTYN
Neil Davey and Jen Dyer are two of the leading proponents of Cornish traditional Celtic music and are members of internationally acclaimed Cornish band Dalla. Between them they have toured everywhere from Sydney to New York, Tokyo to Vancouver, participating in many prestigious festivals and venues across Europe, including The Royal Albert Hall, Glastonbury, Lorient Interceltic Festival and Celtic Connections amongst UK performances.
They love to bring it all back home, ‘where it do belong to be’ in their native Cornwall, and have performed in all the main Cornish arts festivals and celebrated venues such as The Minack Theatre, Eden Project, The Hall for Cornwall and Carnglaze Caverns as well as countless smaller venues.
They play bouzouki, fiddle and viola, and the repertoire of Cornish Celtic music, both new and old, ranges from stonking Celtic jigs, reels and polkas, to the exotic almost Balkan sound of some of the Cornish five-steps, as well as some heart-meltingly beautiful and hypnotic slower pieces.

True Foxes are an up-and-coming, BBC Introducing South West, female duo from West Cornwall. Comprising of cousins Amie Parsons (lead vocals/ guitar) and Chloe Payne (vocal harmonies/bass), they blend pop-folk songwriting, soft rock country and atmospheric harmonies, to create hauntingly beautiful and catchy melodies.
