3 to try: cookery schools
Fancy recreating the taste of your fave Cornish restaurant or making the most of local produce? Head to one of these cookery schools and learn a thing or two from some of Cornwall’s foodie heroes...
Rick Stein's Cookery School - Padstow
With fresh fish landing on its doorstep and the name of the undisputed king of foodie Cornwall hanging above the door, Rick Stein’s Cookery School in Padstow is a must-visit. Pick up expert tips on scaling, boning and filleting, or delve into the flavours of the world with a lesson in Italian, Indian or Mediterranean cookery, before taking a pew alongside fellow students to put your new found skills to the taste test. There are also evening demos and skills workshops, all generously drizzled with Stein’s relaxed signature style.
Philleigh Way Cookery School - The Roseland
Sign up for a course with the Philleigh Way Cookery School on The Roseland and you’ll find yourself in the company of brothers-in-law James Martin and George Pascoe who deliver an infectious enthusiasm for next generation farmhouse cookery. The menu of one day courses covers everything from bread making and simple suppers to a deliciously sounding Kernow Sausage Masterclass, while for wannabe foragers there’s the chance to join Thom Hunt of ‘Three Hungry Boys’ fame to discover edible plants and wild food.
Fat Hen - Nr Lands End
For a taste of the good life get down the west Cornwall and join wild food expert, Caroline Davey for a spot of foraging, cooking and feasting. Rummage in hedgerows and search the shoreline to discover surprising edible treats before heading back to the kitchen and learning how to turn them into the freshest of must-have ingredients. There are also seafood and game cookery courses and even a couple of wild food cycling days in July and August.
