A mellow kayak through autumn mists
The evenings are starting to draw in, the leaves starting to turn, and down in Cornwall the scenery on the wooded creeks, including the Helford River in west Cornwall and the Fowey river, become a blaze of colour. Fallen trees left to rot make stunning natural art and are enjoyed by an abundance of birdlife including the common kingfisher, whose wings are cobalt blue and breast bright orange, mimicking the autumnal colours. In contrast the Little Egrets perch in trees with their bright white feathers looking like lanterns. Numbers swell at this time of year and herons can also be seen standing sentinel in the trees or on exposed mudflats.
Koru Kayaking offer Frenchman’s Creek Kayak Adventures into December when the river becomes even more peaceful. The area, made famous by Daphne DuMauriers book of the same name, is a fantastic place at this time of year to kayak, with wildlife in abundance, quiet waters and stunning scenery. The sunsets can be fantastic too, with bright blue and pink clouds reflecting on the water.
The Daphne DuMaurier theme continues on the Fowey River in east Cornwall, where DuMaurier lived for many years. Encounter Cornwall offer trips from the pretty village of Golant, into the creeks that inspired Kenneth Grahame while writing "Wind in the Willows". Paddle up through the woods to the picturesque village of Lerryn or St Winnows with its waterside church.
Kayaking in Cornwall with an experienced guide is the ultimate way to discover the remote beauty this county has to offer and is something different to do this autumn. For more information check korukayaking.co.uk and encountercornwall.com.
Koru Kayaking also offer trips along the Cornish coast operating out of St Agnes, these are very dependant on sea conditions at this time of the year but well worth doing if the weather permits.
