Big Blue Bude Blog
Cornwall is famous the world over for its surfing beaches, mainly found down its northern facing coast from Sennen just north of Land’s End up to Bude close to the border with Devon. You really are spoilt for choice!
Up at Bude, Summerleaze Beach has gained its reputation as a highlight of the Cornish coast due to its many attributes, such as its popular tidal pool (Bude Sea Pool), beautiful coastal paths and amongst surfers, for having a renowned point-break surf during the high tide. It’s also located in the heart of Bude, handy for drink or a quick pasty after your surf, bars and cafes being less than a two-minute walk away!
Based up at Bude, Big Blue Surf School have been teaching people to surf for over 20 years. Surfing for everyone and enjoying the water safely is at the heart of everything we do. We have safely and successfully introduced over 35,000 men, women and children to our epic sport with many returning to us year after year. We run surfing lessons for individuals, families, schools and for those with disabilities or who are neurodiverse.
We operate on the beautiful Summerleaze Beach in Bude which is one of the most diverse surf destinations in Cornwall with access to a sheltered bay when the conditions are gnarly big and an open sandy beach from mid to low tide meaning we can accommodate all abilities in a variety of surf conditions. So don’t worry if you’re not a fan of big waves!
We run lessons from summer and through winter so if the quieter winter months are more your thing we’ve got thick wetsuits, boots, gloves and most importantly coaches who will take you out all year.
Cyril, our head coach and surf school owner, was one of the first in the world to complete his ISA adaptive surf instructor certificate and is passionate about inclusive surfing. All our coaches are fully qualified for all ability levels and are trained surf lifeguards, most of whom have grown up learning to surf in Bude meaning they have a huge amount of experience with the area. We maintain a high coach to student ratio because when learning to surf, safety is our main priority. Not a fan of big groups? We also offer private lessons where you’re 1:1 with an instructor, they give you a chance to get the most out of your lesson and elevate your surfing to the next level.
At Big Blue we believe everyone should be able to join in which is why we have been running specialised adaptive lessons for many years, for people of all ages with disabilities, including, but not limited to, autism, Down’s syndrome, physical disabilities, speech, sight and hearing impairments and also those with mental health conditions.
Depending on needs and abilities, we can offer anything from a ‘learn to surf’ session, to tandem wave riding with an instructor, as well as extra wide surfboards for solo riding to give additional stability making everything as easy and as fun as possible.
