Insider's guide to Fowey
Visit Cornwall met with Lynn Goold from the Fowey, A Blue Badge Guide, if anybody knows about Fowey, it's Lynn!
What do you love most about Cornwall? The diversity of the scenery, there is somewhere special for any month or type of weather.
Must see sight? The coastline, especially off Fowey harbour. Take a river trip to the mouth of the harbour or the ferry to Mevagissey and gaze at the patchwork of fields that roll down to the rocks and into the sea.
Must do experience? The Hall walk from Bodinnick to Polruan. In itself it is a jolly good walk but as you walk along the paths, the gaps between the trees give the most delightful vistas of Fowey, Polruan and the estuary.
Most people don’t know but… Fowey is the deepest water port between Falmouth and Southampton. At the peak of the China Clay industry it was a major exporting port.
Good value tourist ticket you can buy? A guided walk of Fowey or Polruan. What else could you do where you will learn so much about the history and life of the port of Fowey or the village of Polruan.
Souvenir you must take home? How about some local art? There is plenty to suit all pockets. So whether it's an artist’s print of the view from the harbour or a painting by a local artist, you'll always have something to remind you of Fowey.
Local delicacies to try? Crab sandwiches or a bowl of mussels! You can see the sea, you can hear the sea, now you can taste the sea!
Best viewing spot? St Catherines Castle at the entrance to the harbour. From there you can look across to Polruan on the other side of the river. Look up the river towards the docks or look out to sea. It is an ideal position to watch the sailing on a Wednesday evening or Saturday afternoon.
Best place to see with a guide? Du Maurier Country –discover the places she wrote about in her Cornish novels, feel as though you are walking in the footsteps of those written about in her books. With a guide you will find the mystery of the fiction and how it links to the facts.
The best place for shopping? Oh! Fowey is a joy. There is so much to discover. Numerous art galleries, wonderful interior design shops, fun and glamorous toys and clothes for kids, a really colourful shoe shop and is so much more. Ensure you have enough time to savour some of the local delicacies in the restaurants, tea shops or pubs.
Where is a must-visit which will keep the kids entertained? Crabbing from the rocks or some of the quays in Fowey – it has been done for generations and is still entertaining!
Anything else? Fowey is a wonderful place to slow your pace down, whether it is a trip across the river by the ferry, a walk on the coastal footpath or just sitting on the quay or in the quiet gardens. It is somewhere to relax and enjoy Fowey to the full.
