National Trust Trengwainton Garden
Trengwainton is a garden of contrasts, with winding wooded paths opening onto wide grassy lawns and sea views across Mounts Bay. It’s celebrated for the collection of award-winning rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias within its 25 acres, some of which flowered here for the first time in Britain. Water is a feature, with two ponds and a gentle stream running through the centre of the garden. Two giant tree fern glades give a Jurassic feel while in the lower half of the garden there’s an orchard and ten sections of walled gardens; five are filled with tender exotic species from around the world and five are a kitchen garden that includes unique sloping beds.
A café is set in its own walled garden and is accessed from within the main garden. It has indoor and outdoor seating and serves drinks, cakes and light lunches. A shop by the garden entrance sells gifts, homeware, books, local produce and gardening accessories. Trengwainton-inspired plants can be purchased in the plant centre. A second-hand bookshop is set in the old head gardener's cottage and seasonal garden produce is sold when available.
Those with accessible needs can hire an electric mobility Tramper (Ts&Cs apply) or an all-terrain manual wheelchair. Accessible toilets are available in the main car park, café and in the garden next to the bookshop. There are hearing loops in the shop/reception, the café and bookshop, and guides are available in large print, braille, Easy Read and a Visual Story. Two areas of the garden are set aside for quiet contemplation in partnership with the national Silent Space charity (Registered charity no. 1190013).
Dogs on short leads are welcome throughout the garden, shop and café garden. Inside the café building and second-hand bookshop is assistance dogs only.
