The Kneehigh Asylum
The Asylum is Kneehigh’s award winning, long-awaited, much dreamed about, jaw-dropping, spirit-lifting nomadic theatre space. A place of fun, playfulness and sanctuary, The Asylum is a purpose built tent, a home and "a place predisposed to magic".
Kneehigh in association with Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Berkeley Repertory Theatre
Adapted by Michael Morpurgo and Emma Rice from The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips
Imagine being told to leave your home…
Imagine American soldiers occupying your house and land…
Imagine being 12 and angry, with only a cat to tell your secrets to…
Well it all happened (most of it anyway) in Slapton Sands, Devon, in 1944. Based on Michael Morpurgo’s The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips, 946 explodes everything we thought we knew about the D-Day landings. With signature Kneehigh sorcery, 946 uses music, puppetry and foolishness to tell this tale of war, prejudice and love. Tender, political and surprisingly romantic, this story speaks to us all and will finally reveal the secrets the US and British governments tried to keep quiet.
Directed by Emma Rice, with a Kneehigh cast that includes Mike Shepherd, Craig Johnson, Giles King, Patrycja Kujawska and Katy Owen, composition by Stu Barker, design by Lez Brotherston and lighting design by Malcolm Rippeth, this promises to be an event to remember in the enchanted setting of The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Michael Morpurgo is one of the UK's most loved and successful authors whose work includes War Horse, Kensuke's Kingdom and Private Peaceful.
The Asylum is Kneehigh’s award winning, jaw-dropping, spirit-lifting nomadic theatre space. A place of fun, playfulness and sanctuary, the Asylum is a purpose built tent, a home and – as described by The Guardian – ‘a place predisposed to magic’. In Cornwall for the fifth year, the Asylum seasons are a chance for friends old and new to enjoy world class theatre, delicious food and drink, live music and a good old-fashioned Kneehigh knees-up. Entry to the gardens is free for Kneehigh ticket holders from 6pm. If you want to spend longer exploring (and we think you will!) then you can buy a combined ticket.
Make a day of it: explore the extraordinary gardens, feast on tasty home-grown produce in the tearooms and later on, refresh yourself at the legendary Asylum bar, before enjoying the show!
Tickets go on sale to Kneehigh Friends on Thursday 19 February, and on general sale Thursday 26 February.
