The Old Coastguard

Welcome to The Old Coastguard

Winner of Seaside Hotel of the Year in the 2020 Good Hotel Guide and the IWC UK Wine List of the Year, The Old Coastguard has 14 bedrooms and is one leg of EATDRINKSLEEP, a small group of inns which also includes The Gurnard’s Head, near Zennor, and The Felin Fach Griffin, near Brecon and Hay-on-Wye.

Run by Charles & Edmund Inkin and owned with the Tresco Estate, it sits immediately above the sea, with a palm lined garden running down towards the rocks. Its 14 bedrooms, nearly all looking out over glistening inland waters, have views to St. Michael's Mount and the Lizard.

Our rooms

  • Sleep Well

The salty air of the Cornish seaside lends itself well to a good night's sleep, whatever Mousehole's seagulls might have to say. So we've sourced only the best beds. Each bedroom has a view of the sea, many with nothing between it and us save our garden and a few rocks. Some enjoy a mere glimpse, others a astonishing panorama from a top floor balcony. In each room, Roberts Radios, toiletries from Bramley Products, proper coffee and Cornish tea, soft linen and books with which to curl up on your bed.

Informality is immediately apparent at the Old Coastguard.

Deep sofas surround coffee tables, oak and distressed pine tables for drinkers and eaters alike and an open fire lit during the autumn and winter. Guests are welcome to eat in the dining room, bar or on the sofas overlooking the terrace and the sea. The walls are hung with the work of the community of artists inspired by this part of West Cornwall with regular temporary exhibitions.

They've built the reputation of their kitchen on the maxim that the best things in life are kept simple and it's truer than anywhere here in Mousehole. This is a traditional menu that takes good ingredients and gives them a very simple but classic treatment.

Danny Garland took on the role of Head Chef in early 2023. With a hinterland within the Ottolenghi Group and previously at the legendary Bristol eaterie, Bel's Diner, he brings a love of good ingredients, classical cooking and supportive mentoring. Although seafood will shine in a kitchen just two miles from Newlyn, this is always a balanced menu.

Wine is as important as the food at The Old Coastguard and recently, EatDRINKSleep has been awarded Restaurant Wine List of the Year by the International Wine Challenge, IWC 2019 Merchants Awards at the glittering Grosvenor House.

This is a great place to stay, and to eat. Food is tremendous, rooms are stylish and individual, staff are friendly, knowledgeable and want you to enjoy yourself and location is perfect. We stayed in Room 5. Top of the building, so stairs and eaves, but a bath overlooking the ocean, and a private balcony make that all worthwhile.

The day boats and trawlers of Newlyn tie up just two miles west of Mousehole where you would rightly expect their menu to have plenty of fresh fish and seafood.
