Muffin Running weekend
Once upon a time, there were only two locomotives at Lappa Valley – Zebedee and Muffin.
Built in 1967 and designed by renowned steam engineer David Curwen, it was formerly based at the Longleat Safari Park and was the second steam locomotive to arrive at Lappa Valley in 1976.
Muffin is a favourite amongst visitors and drivers alike. That’s why over the weekend of the 5th and 6th October 2024, we will be running Muffin in regular service.
It will be running at least every 40 minutes between Benny Halt and East Wheal Rose, plus you will have the opportunity to it her up-close.
Please note, that although we will of course endeavour to run the advertised services, we reserve the right to amend or remove services of locomotives due to circumstances out of our control – for example, mechanical failure. Muffin will be running alternate services with one of our diesel locomotives.
The Duke's 10th birthday weekend
Join us as we celebrate The Duke’s 10th Birthday over the weekend of the 19th and 20th October.
Running on our 10¼ inch gauge railway, Newlyn Downs Branch line, The Duke was originally built for and operated at the now closed Wells Harbour Railway, Norfolk in 2014. It arrived at Lappa Valley in 2021 – and entered service 2022.
Designed by Alan Keen Ltd, it’s a 0-6-0 diesel hydraulic powered by a Perkins 22 bhp 3 cylinder engine.
We will be sharing more details closer to the time.
Lappa Valley’s Fireworks Spectaculars
Join us for one of the major highlights in the Lappa Valley events calendar!
Our Grand Fireworks Spectaculars have become a firm favourite for all the family to enjoy!
Two dates this year will feature spectacular fireworks displays at the historic 19th Century Engine House. The Kernow Fireworks Company will bring the site to life with a dazzling show of rockets, fountains, candles, and more.
For pre-show entertainment, from the time the first train of visitors arrives around 5:30 PM, the Engine Shed, which includes an indoor soft play area, will be open for children to enjoy. Visitors can also take a ride on the Lakeside Railway before the fireworks begin at approximately 7:30 PM.
There will be plenty of food and drinks available, with the café serving a variety of hot and cold meals, snacks, and both soft and alcoholic beverages. A well-stocked stall will offer glow products such as glow sticks, glasses, headbands, and more.
Please note that these events are available by pre-booking only.
Father Christmas at Lappa Valley
One of Cornwall’s most loved family attractions has released the details of their popular Father Christmas events this December.
Lappa Valley, near St Newlyn East has announced that “Father Christmas at Lappa Valley” will take place on selected dates in the run-up to Christmas.
Families are invited to board a nostalgic train, taking a journey through the winter countryside arriving into the historic East Wheal Rose which offers a distinctly festive feel.
Guests will then be invited to experience a range of festive activities, before the elves take them to meet the man in red himself in his special grotto where every child gets a good-quality gift. Both adults and children will also enjoy a complimentary seasonal refreshment during their visit.
Ben Harding, Operations Director at Lappa Valley said: “Christmas is one of our favourite times of the year and we are so pleased to be bringing our Father Christmas experience back for 2024.
“Lappa Valley is one of Cornwall’s most unique experiences and we receive such positive feedback each year. We strictly limit the number of slots available, to ensure everyone is able to make the most of their experience.”
This year, for the first time all three of Lappa Valley’s railways will be operating during the Christmas events, including the Newlyn Downs Branchline and the Lakeside Railway with unlimited rides included in the admission.
The outdoor play areas and adventure golf, as well as the all-weather indoor soft play will also be open and included in the admission. Meanwhile, The Engine Shed Café will be offering a range of delicious home-cooked meals and festive specials too.
Ben continued: “Slots are already starting to fill fast, and for the last few years we’ve actually sold out so I recommend securing your booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment”.
