In Conversation: Lamorna Ash & Charlotte Hobson
Don’t miss an intimate discussion between celebrated author Lamorna Ash and fellow writer Charlotte Hobson.
Ash’s debut memoir, Dark, Salt, Clear, captured life in Newlyn with poetic clarity and earned critical acclaim, including a Wainwright Prize shortlisting and the Somerset Maugham Award. Her latest book, Don’t Forget We’re Here Forever, explores a spiritual revival among young people in Britain and her own exploration of faith in modern society.
This is a unique opportunity to hear Ash reflect on belonging, belief, and identity—rooted in a strong matrilineal connection to Cornwall.
May Half Term Family Activity: Quirky Collage
Get creative this May half term with Quirky Collage, a fun and imaginative art activity for children and families.
Inspired by the playful spirit of outsider artist Terry Shaul, this hands-on workshop invites you to cut, layer, and glue your way to colourful creations. Let your imagination run wild and build your own surreal cityscapes or curious creatures to take home.
Throughout the week, contribute to a collaborative artwork inspired by Shaul’s Truro Cathedral—reimagined through community collage.
Here and Now
An art exhibition with a difference opens at Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery this month, as local artists unite to support the museum’s innovative Dementia Programme.
Here and Now is an exhibition and auction of 60+ postcard-sized artworks – each generously donated by a local artist.
The postcards will be on display at the museum between 24th May and 21st June, with artists and their families invited to a celebratory opening event.
The postcards will be displayed anonymously, with an online auction taking place between 6th – 20th June.
Once sold to the highest bidder, the artist of each work will be revealed before they make their way to new homes.
All funds raised will go towards supporting and growing the museum’s Dementia Programme, at the heart of which is the Monday Museum Club.
The Monday Museum Club is for people with mild to moderate dementia and uses items from the museum’s historical collections as the basis for activities and discussion with the aim of nurturing connection, independence, and a sense of personal identity.
The Monday Museum Club was developed in partnership with Memory Matters and is designed to help with brain function to reduce memory loss; two groups have been running since 2022, with a waiting list of participants keen to join.
£4,000 would fund one group for a whole year, while £8,000 would keep both groups running - an ambitious target, but according to the museum anything raised via the auction will help immensely.
All the artworks can be viewed online at www.cornwallmuseum.org/exhibition/here-and-now/ where the participating artists are also listed; the exhibition opens to the public on 24th May and the auction begins on 6th June at www.32auctions.com/hereandnow.
Tony Foster: Exploring Time, A Painter's Perspective
Tony Foster is a Cornwall-based artist and environmentalist. For 45 years he has painted ‘en plein air’ in the wild places of the world, undertaking expeditions to rainforests, icebergs, deserts and mountains. In 1994 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
Foster’s watercolours reflect on the forces of nature and change in these wild places, his powers of observation resulting in work which is both scientifically valuable and sublimely beautiful.
In his major new exhibition, Exploring Time: A Painter’s Perspective, Foster focuses on continuity and transformation in ourselves and the world around us. From the earliest convulsions which formed our planet to fleeting shifts in weather, he poses the question of how our own lifespans relate to both the timeless and the transient.
This touring exhibition, sponsored by The Foster Museum in Palo Alto, California, begins here before heading to the Royal Watercolour Society in London, the Dayton Art Institute in Ohio, and other venues across the United States.
