Five to try; Dog friendly gardens

Four-legged visitors are welcomed with open paws in many of Cornwall’s glorious gardens. We’ve sniffed out those that are open all year-round for walkies so take our lead and get tails wagging.

Lost Gardens of Heligan - St Austell There’s no limit to the amount of fun that visitors of the wagging tail and wet nose variety can have at this famous garden; canine companions on best behaviour are given a year round welcome and have over 200 acres to explore. They’ll discover new smells galore in the Victorian Productive and Pleasure Gardens, will love the sub-tropical jungle and go mad for the ancient woodland. A well-timed post-walkies nap will steer padding paws clear of the no go zones for dogs; tearoom, Stewardry, shop and plant sales area.

Trebah Garden - Falmouth This ravine garden leads to a private beach on the Helford River so paws can get muddy, sandy and wet at the doggie haven of Trebah Garden. Poop scoops are available on arrival to take care of any ‘presents’ and while there’s a dog-free policy in the Planters Café, the garden terrace and picnic areas are pooch friendly refuel spots.

Pinetum Park - St Austell Another garden with the woof factor is Pinetum Park in St Austell. With the largest collection of plants in the county, the varied 30 acres are full of character and perfect for energetic canines and garden mad doggie masters alike. From the wide open ‘Pinetum’ with its amphitheatre arrangement of conifers and pines, to the seclusion and intimacy of the Japanese Garden, there are visual treats at every turn and a wealth of wildlife including two beautiful black swans. There’s also a tearoom and farm shop.

Tremenheere Sculpture Garden - Penzance For a garden walk with amazing views, Tremenheere comes out tops. As St Michael’s Mount rises enigmatically from the bay in the distance, mindfully placed art installations surprise and inspire, while the woods and streams in the sheltered valley provide the perfect setting for large scale and exotic plantings. With tails wagging and mouths drooling take a seat in the outdoor area of the delicious Lime Tree Café and complete the visit by popping in the shop; pooches more than welcome.

Eden Project - St Austell Four legged visitors are able to explore miles of paths within the former china clay quarry, and whilst they aren’t permitted in the Biomes or undercover areas, they are welcome in the Visitor Centre and can relax in designated outdoor undercover dining areas. Water and dog waste bins are also dotted across the super garden. Please keep dogs on leads at all times.
