The tiny coastal village of Porthcurno, located in West Cornwall, was once the heart of international telecommunications, boasting the largest telegraph station in the world. As the G7 summit drew to a close last week, it was interesting to reflect that the leaders were meeting in Cornwall – a place that has a long history of global connectivity.
With the G7 leaders coming to Cornwall in June 2021, we have been researching links between Cornwall and the countries represented.

The Chynoweth League
While the Chynoweth name will be most familiar in Cornwall as the name of a family within the Poldark series, the Cornish surname – literally meaning ‘new house’ – has also given rise to a family powerhouse within the hockey world.
Narrow streets and steep valley sides lead you down to the centre of the old Mevagissey, where the distinctive twin harbour provides a safe haven for the fishing boats that land their daily catch of skate, lobster, plaice and sole. Mevagissey was built on fish, in the 1800s and early 1900s it prospered on the back of the abundant source of pilchards (sardines) caught in local waters.
