Marking the beginning of winter, a one day celebration in St Austell, the china clay capital of Cornwall. Live bands, stalls, music and dance and the Torchlight Carnival parades through the town.

What happens?

St. Austell comes alive for the celebrations with a whole day of entertainment throughout the town, with live bands, stalls, music and dance and as it gets darker, the tremendous spectacle of the Torchlight Carnival parades through the town.

How can you take part?

Carnival entries assemble for judging from 4.30 pm at John Keay House and the procession moves off at 6pm, making its way down through the town to the One Stop Shop for presentation of prizes. The carnival attracts over 1000 people to join in the procession and continues to get be bigger, brighter and better every year. Spectacular lanterns, samba bands and colourful floats make this a day to remember.

St Austell grew in the mid-1700s after the discovery of valuable china clay, known as white gold, in the area. Used initially in pottery, today Cornwall’s china clay is shipped all over the world as an additive to everything from tyres to toothpaste.
